Galaxy Girls battle to Draw with Daventry

Game day yesterday at Ansley for the Haunchwood sports junior football club Galaxy girls as we welcomed Daventry Town. Firstly it was great to see good numbers make the game as many teams struggle to field full teams with subs at this age which shows how girls football is growing.

The game was very evenly matched right from the start with both teams going back and forth. The visitors edged the opening exchanges and looked more settled on the ball but didn't create many clear cut chances. When Daventry got into the Galaxy penalty area the defence swarmed them and made it difficult to get a shot off. Anything the did get in behind Talia was equal to in goal.

At the other end the Galaxy were kept mainly long range efforts which rarely troubled the Daventry goalkeeper and a couple of good through balls from the midfield sent wingers forward but again were unable to capitalise. Liv also having a run into the box and shooting across goal just off target and out of reach of Imogen sliding in at the far post.

Daventry did take the lead on around the 20 minute mark.

Some neat touches from the Daventry player and missed tackles from the Galaxy midfield meant she was able to skip through the midfield and defence and slotted past the incoming Talia in goal.

The Galaxy girls got back to level terms before half time after a seemingly wasteful long range efforts from Mimi somehow managed to go under the goalkeeper and into the goal.

With the game level at half time the Galaxy girls seemed to up their game in the second half and created the better of the chances and Daventry posing a threat on the counter with their speed. Galaxy getting into some good positions in and around the box but either running out of space to get off a shot due to some good defending from Daventry or the shot not being accurate enough to trouble the keeper too much.

Galaxy's did take the lead on 50 minutes as Evie drove into the box, working the ball to Sophie who knocked the ball past the keeper and into the goal from about 6 yards out.

The lead was very short lived though, Daventry playing in a low corner to the edge of the 6 yard box and it was the attacking team who showed more desire to get to the ball which eventually went into the goal past the despairing dive from Bobbi.

A final throw of the dice saw plenty of effort from the Galaxy girls to win the game but were unable to find that 3rd goal which would have won the game.

All in all a good game with lots of positives to take forward.

Thanks to Daventry Town for making a good, exciting game too.
